Cebu Philippines: Awesome Boy Studies on Sidewalk

This picture has gone viral. It shows the image of a child studying on a makeshift table on a sidewalk.

Joyce Torrefranca, a medical student at Cebu Doctor's University, took this photo of a nine-year-old boy named Daniel. She posted the picture in Facebook and it's been trending.

I thought I'd share this picture with my readers and the link to the news article about it too. Yes --- it made the news. I quote from that article:

"In a telephone interview, Mcdonald's Cebu North Reclamation restaurant manager Iris Prak said that Daniel, his mother, and his 7-year-old brother Gabriel usually stay outside Mcdonald's to beg from passers-by.

The brothers do their homework there after school because they do not have electricity at home. Prak said that sometimes, the boys' mother works at a nearby food stall, where the family of 3 usually sleeps at night."

I am not sure if Daniel is technically a "street child" (read this link for the definition) because he has his mother and brother and they have a place to sleep in, but I'll wager he's a hair away from being one. Here's some information about the street children of the Philippines. There are over 1.5 million street children in the Philippines. They face health problems and are vulnerable to being exploited sexually. Some use drugs. Some become child prostitutes. There are even children in jail.

Filipinos realize the situation Daniel is in. They are aware of the the difficulties and dangers that confront him. This is why Filipinos are in awe over this image of Daniel.
May the future be bright for this tenacious child!

P.S. This is a followup article re Daniel who wants to be cop or doctor and who keeps a rosary in his schoolbag so his solitary pencil will not stolen.
