Filipino American Authors - HOT OFF THE PRESS LITERARY READING, SUNDAY, Oct. 20, 12:30-1:30 pm




INVITATION TO THE HOT OFF THE PRESS LITERARY READINGS, moderated by Cecilia Brainard, part of the Second Filipino American International Book Festival in San Francisco:

Filipino American authors will read from their recently published books on Sunday Oct. 20, 12:30-1:30  p.m, at the San Francisco Main Library, 100 Larkin St. (at Grove), San Francisco, CA. The event is free.

There is also a literary reading on Saturday, Oct. 18, 1:45-2:45 p.m. (see their names below).

Sunday - Oct. 20, 12:30-1:30 p.m.



is the author of HER WILD AMERICAN SELF (Coffee House Press, ’96); the novel ONE TRIBE (New Issues Press, ’06); and ANGEL DE LA LUNA AND THE 5TH GLORIOUS MYSTERY (Coffee House Press 2013). She has edited the anthology, SCREAMING MONKEYS: Critiques of Asian American Images (Coffee House Press, ‘03). She is currently writing LOLAS’ HOUSE: WOMEN LIVING WITH WAR, stories of surviving Filipina WWII “Comfort Women” and is at work on a new novel, BEAUTIFUL SORROW, BEAUTIFUL SKY. Galang teaches in and directs the Creative Writing Program at the University of Miami, is core faculty for VONA/Voices: Voices of Our Nation Arts Foundation and has been named one of the 100 most influential Filipinas in the United States by Filipina Women’s Network.

Giovanni Ortega
is a Playwright,  Director and Performer who has been working professionally for over ten years. He wrote, ALLOS, the story of Carlos Bulosan which was commissioned by  East West Players and is currently a part of  "Our American Voice" at the Japanese American National Museum. It had it's premiere in Chicago, produced by the CIRCA Pintig Theater Company in December, 2012. He recently finished a North American Tour with Playfair, a one-man show that incorporates Motivational Speaking and Diversity Engagement. In addition, Giovanni recently took the literary artist category for FPAC Pahayag Project for the most sought after author with his first book, Leaves from the Silverlake Barrio, published by The Undeniables. As a performer, he originated the role of Tumao in Aswang, an opera by acclaimed composer Florante Aguilar, and also worked with him on Lalawigan at the Asian Art Museum.

Nieves Catahan Villamin
is the author of Bittermelons and Mimosas: A Philippine Memoir. Her memoir will inspire other Filipinos who strive for a piece of the American dream. She is the letter “N” of the Eden in Eden Canyon Vineyards, said to the first Filipino American owned and operated estate winery in the United States producing award-winning vintages. Villamin worked for 14 years at Cal Ply, San Luis Obispo where she was the advisor of the Pilipino Cultural Exchange that sponsored student and faculty exchanges between the US and the Philippines. In recognition of her philantrophy, she received the Outstanding Woman of the Year Award from Cal Poly in 2003.
is the author of a novella, Jenalyn, and the short story collections Ginseng and Other Tales From Manila, Mayor of the Roses, and The Lost Language.  With Virginia Cerenio, she co-edited the Filipino women's anthology Going Home to a Landscape.  She has been published in a wide variety of publications, including The Threepenny Review, The Asian American Literary Review, The Chattahoochee Review, Prism International, the New Orleans Review, and J Journal.  She is currently completing a fourth collection, called Magellan's Mirror.


is a prizewinning documentary filmmaker, film historian and a faculty member at the University of the Philippines. He received his Master of Arts degree in Cinema Studies from New York University and his Certificate in Film in Paris, France. He has won awards for his gritty documentaries and personal films. He has also received international fellowships and scholarship grants such as those from Fulbright, Japan Foundation and The Asian Public Intellectuals. Three times he was awarded the Manila Critic Circle’s National Book Awards. He is presently finishing a five-volume series on the hundred–year history of Philippine cinema. The second installment in the series, Film: American Influences on Philippine Cinema is what he is promoting in this year’s book fair. His book series is accompanied by a ten-hour documentary series in 3D animation.

is Adjunct Professor of Philippine and Asian Studies at the University of San Francisco and is the Head Coach of the USF Boxing Team.
Authors of Pancho to Pacquiao: Philippine Boxing In and Out of the Rin

was born in the Philippines and raised in the San Francisco, California Bay Area. He spent his college years in the Philippines where he honed his knowledge about Philippine culture. Kristian is a self-taught artist influenced by calligraphy, graffiti, abstract art, indigenous culture, technology and Asian writing systems. As a leading authority for the propagation and instruction of the indigenous Philippine script (Baybayin), he developed a modern performance style of the writing system called Tulang Kalis (Poetry of the Sword) and introduced it as Filipino Calligraphy with a series of live demonstrations and lectures at the Asian Art Museum in October 2012. He has spoken at numerous schools and institutions around the world such as Stanford University, UC Berkeley, SF State University, UC Davis, Sonoma State, University of the Philippines and the National Anthropology Museum of Madrid.
    Author of a book on Baybayin.
